Broken iMac?

the motherboard on my iMac is broken and will cost $1000 to fix, so I’m just planning to get a new computer, maybe a macbook. Is there any way that i could us the lcd as a screen for another computer or maybe a second monitor for a macbook?
its the 20 inch imac generation before the current one.

Unfortunately, you cannot use the iMac’s display as a secondary display for another machine. As far as the logic board/getting a new machine issue goes, here is my ultimate advice:

If you absolutely love the iMac and would rather keep it instead of buying a whole new machine, there are places on the internet where you can obtain just the logic board component starting at $649.95 and possibly below. $1000 is about the price Apple will charge, especially if they install it. I am unaware of your technical skills, but I would say it is quite a take apart job. Lucky you that it is the old version of the iMac. The new iMac, which I currently use, has a much more complicated take apart. Anyway, you may not even want to bother with the repair, because it may not be the problem part at all. If you could just explain to me what the problem is with the iMac, I am sure I can point you in the right direction. Seems rather early for a logic board failure, but that all depends on how much use the machine gets. If it is the board, I recommend selling the iMac for parts and using that money toward a new MacBook.
